Congratulations to our five Bradshaw Barracudas who made the GHSA High School State Swim & Dive finals session for SHS! Our 6A girls - Delaney, Laurel, Kelsey and Lainey - placed 4th in the state overall! Their two relays - 200 Medley and 400 Free - both placed 3rd! Delaney and Laurel are state champions in both their individual events - Delaney 50 Free and 100 Free; Laurel 200 Free and 500 Free. Lainey 5th in 500 Free. Kelsey 7th in 100 Back. Logan 8th in 500 Free! So proud of all our Barracudas who went to prelims and finals!

Sept 28, 2021 - Coach Grant on USA Swimming National Junior Team
Coach Grant is off to the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup with the USA Swimming National Junior Team! Currently the team is in Berlin, Germany and then heads to Budapest, Hungary! Good luck and have fun! We will be cheering for you back home!
"USA Swimming has named a squad of 22 girls and 21 boys to the National Junior Team that will represent the U.S. at the third and fourth legs of the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup this fall.
USA Swimming used the FINA rules for World Junior Championships which define juniors as girls between 14-17 years of age as at December 31, 2021 and boys between 15-18 years of age as at December 31, 2021.

2021 July - USA Swimming Futures Meet in Huntsville, AL
The long course USA Swimming Futures Meet was held in Huntsville, Alabama at the end of July. This is a national level meet with swimmers of all ages who make the qualifying cut times. Medals went to the top 8 of each event. Congrats to the following Barracudas who swim for Chattahoochee Gold and placed in the top 8! Grant Davis finished 4th overall in the 400 Free. Laurel Blase placed 4th overall in the 400 IM. Laurel Blase and Delaney Harrison swam in the 800 Free relay and ended up finishing 7th overall. Their relay also broke the Gold team record set back in 2014! Delaney Harrison also swam in the 400 Free relay that scored 6th overall! Congrats 'Cudas!

Coach Grant swam at the Olympic Trials Wave II in Omaha, Nebraska! At Trials he swam for a spot to go to the Olympics in Tokyo!! He competed in the 800 Freestyle which aired on TV. He came in 27th out of 49 swimmers who competed (and had the initial cut/qualifying time)! Congratulations Grant...we are all so proud of you!

At the GHSA swimming and diving championships this past weekend, it was Sequoyah that led the way for Cherokee County.
All three swimmers who finished on the podium — in the top three in their respective races — were from Sequoyah while the Sequoyah girls finished sixth in AAAAAA, the highest finish for any county team.
Sequoyah junior Grant Davis took first place in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 4:30.6, nearly two full two seconds faster than both his state prelims time (4:32.26) and his county record time of 4:32.33!
Davis also finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:41.36.
Sequoyah freshman Laurel Blase was the only other Cherokee County swimmer to finish on the podium with third place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle events. Blase’s time of 1:52.37 in the 200 yard freestyle eclipsed both her prelim time (1:53.19) and her first place finish time at the county championships (1:54.13).
In the 500-yard freestyle, Blase recorded a time of 5:00.90, a remarkable 12 seconds faster than her first place finish at this year’s county championships (5:12.93).

ATLANTA — Four swimmers and one a championship diver was all it took for the Sequoyah girls to finish 13th overall in the Class AAAAAA and AAAAAAA meet Saturday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
For the Sequoyah girls, diver Rachel Renner set the stage Thursday by claiming the diving championship with a score of 527.45 points, beating Mill Creek’s Ambria D’Alonzo by nearly 15 points.
In Saturday’s swimming finals, Sequoyah returned its 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays in the “B” heat with Emma Gelatt, Ansley Davis, Jordan Weems and Kristina Friedrichs leading the way. Friedrichs also came back in the 50 and 100 freestyles, and Jordan Weems returned in the 100 backstroke.
Friedrichs made the top heat in the 50 freestyle and finished second with a time of 24.20 seconds. She also finished 13th in the 100 freestyle (52.63). Weems won the “B” heat of the 100 backstroke in 58.23, recording the sixth-best time overall.
“It was amazing to move up into 6A and 7A and finish 13th with only a handful of girls,” Sequoyah coach Miriam Greene said. “We had amazing swims.”

Sequoyah diver Rachel Renner kicked off the state championships with a bang Thursday, winning the girls 1-meter dive in the new combined Class AAAAAA and Class AAAAAAA competition.
The junior set a new county record with a score of 527.45 points to beat Mill Creek’s Ambria D’Alonzo (512.60) and Walton’s Samantha Carmon (482.70).
“It was really good competition,” Renner said. “Moving up this year, I knew there a lot of really good divers, but I knew, if I hit my dives, I would have a chance.”
Renner rolled through her first five dives and was near the top of the leaderboard when the field was cut to 24. After her eighth dive, she held a narrow lead as the field was cut to 20, and she knew she needed her best performance in her last three dives to bring home the title.
“After the eighth dive, it was very close,” Renner said. “I was only one point ahead. I knew, if I hit my last three dives, I would do well. My (degree of difficulty) was higher, and those were some of my good dives. I knew, if I hit those, no one would be able to catch me.”
Despite the pressure, Renner nailed a reverse 1½-pike, a front 1½ with a full twist and a back somersault with 1½ twists to pull away from the competition.
Renner said the feeling when she won the championship was “unbelievable,” but it was a feeling she had been working toward for over a year.
Last season in the Class A-AAAAA meet, Renner finished fourth, and she said that motivated her all season.
“I’ve been really motivated to do well at the state meet all year,” she said. “It’s definitely been on my mind. It’s obviously a big meet, and since it’s my junior year, it’s really important to me to do well. I’m just glad I was able to make it happen.”
Etowah freshman Sydney Williams (362.10) placed 17th overall.
Renner became the first Cherokee County diver to win a state championship since Etowah’s Madison DuVall, who is now at Georgia, won consecutive titles in 2014 and ’15.
Sequoyah (24 points) will go into today’s swimming preliminaries sitting fourth overall behind Colquitt County (34), Dunwoody (32) and Walton (27) — all of had multiple divers place Thursday.

Sequoyah’s Swim team has performed quite well this season, sending a number of swimmers to the State Meet. They finished 2nd at the Cherokee County meet last weekend and are preparing for success at the State Meet. The Lady Chiefs had three swimmers top 20 points for the meet. Kristina Friedrichs won the 50 (25.76) and 100 (56.59) freestyles, Jordan Weems, won the 200 freestyle (2:02.61) and finished just behind Friedrichs in the 100 freestyle (58.27) and Emma Gelatt finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:05.62) and 100 backstroke (1:07.09).

Sequoyah’s girls swimming team surpassed expectations in 2015 when it finished fifth at the Class A-AAAAA state championships, despite having just 12 swimmers.
The Lady Chiefs bested that finish this season, improving to third with three fewer swimmers.
Coach Nell Hess said she knew Sequoyah would be strong based on returning talent, but she was not expecting the group to take another step forward.
“If we had come in fifth, I would have been ecstatic with less people,” said Hess, the 2015-16 Cherokee Tribune Girls Swimming Coach of the Year said. “I thought we would do well. I knew we would have the potential, but losing three people makes a difference.”
With her expectations slightly lowered, Hess said finishing third in the state made the season extra special.
“This season was different, because it was so unexpected,” she said. “We had three fewer swimmers this season. I figured we’d take a little hit there, but those guys swam out of their minds. It was unbelievable. To go up two places with less people was really special.”

Over eleven-hundred of Georgia’s best 14-and under swimmers representing 53 teams took to the pool at Georgia Tech to compete for the title of State Champion.
During the 3-day meet (February 19-21), 13 State Records and one National record were broken.
The Chattahoochee Gold 11-12 Boys 400 Medley relay put on one of the highlights of the meet winning not only the event, but also breaking the team and State Record in the process. The relay team consisted of Owen Holland, Griffin Egolf, Lawson Weddington & Grant Davis (our very own Bradshaw Barracuda!).

A total of 41 Chattahoochee Gold swimmers made it to the finals of the meet, earning over two-thousand points for the team – good for third place overall among the Large Division (over 200 swimmers) teams. Swim Atlanta was State Champion.

SWIMMING
The Woodstock-based Chattahoochee Gold swim team had a strong showing it the age group state championships at Georgia Tech last weekend, finishing third in the large division.
The meet featured 53 teams and 1,100 of the state’s top under-14 swimmers.
Lawson Weddington won the boys age 11-12 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly. Langston Weddington won the boys age 13-14 100 and 200 breaststrokes and Griffin Egolf took home three individual titles in the 400 individual medley and the 50 and 100 breaststrokes.
The boys age 11-12 400 medley relay team also took home a state championship and a state record. The team featured Egolf, Lawson Weddington, Owen Holland and Grant Davis.
In total, 41 Chattahoochee Gold swimmers qualified for the finals in their events.

Sequoyah HS Swim & Dive finished 3rd place in the 1A-5A State Meet! There are 126 schools in class 1A-5A, and Sequoyah had 5 girls competing in finals.
The last event of the meet was with Kristina Friedrichs, Jordan Weems, Kamryn Carter, and Sophie Roy swimming for 2nd in the 400 free relay and clinching the 3rd place overall team finish! Other events included Kristina placing 2nd in the state and Kamryn placing 4th in the state in the 50 free…..
Kristina placing 4th in 50 free, Kamryn 11th in 200 IM, Sophie 15th in 200 IM, and 200 Medley Relay 3rd place!
Rachel Renner placed 4th in the state in the Dive competition! Thanks to Nell Hess, Miriam Greene, and Pam Hess for being the most amazing coaches.
The entire team, both boys and girls, swam and dove their hearts out this weekend. Amazing time to be a Sequoyah Chief and Bradshaw Barracuda!!!

2016 HS Senior Night at the Cherokee County Championship Swim Meet
Big congratulations to all our Sequoyah High School Senior Chief swimmers!!! The meet was Monday night, January 25, 2016 at the Cherokee County Aquatic Center. Thank you to coaches Nell Hess, Pam Hess and Miriam Greene! The high schools that competed at the meet were: Sequoyah HS, Woodstock HS, Etowah HS, River Ridge HS, Cherokee HS, and Creekview HS.
