Grabbing state meet berths, 42 county youth swimmers combined for 64 top-three individual event showings at the Georgia Parks & Recreation Association’s Summer Swim League District 5 Meet on July 12 at the Cherokee County Aquatic Center in Holly Springs.
Highlighting the performances, 14 swimmers captured individual titles, including Garrett Dempsey, Dylan Villhauer, Clare Mills and Meghan Peterson, who won a pair of events each.
Opening his day with the boys’ 14-and-under 100 Individual Medley, Dempsey completed his swim in 1 minute and 3.87 seconds — nearly 6 seconds better than runner-up and fellow county performer Drew Madsen (1:09.85) — for his first title, then claimed the 50 Butterfly in 27.79, edging Thaddeus Palmer, of Cherokee, by .62. One of three 8U girls’ swimmers to come away on top, Mills took the 100 IM by more than 7 seconds with a 1:39.06 and claimed the 25 Backstroke in 20.83, and the 18U girls’ Peterson took the 50 Back in 29.40, before winning the 50 Fly in 28.49.
