HOLLY SPRINGS — Cherokee County will send more than 70 swimmers on to the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s state meet following Saturday’s District 5 meet at the Cherokee County Aquatic Center.
The district meet featured swimmers from clubs in Cherokee and Paulding counties, as well as the cities of Smyrna and Cartersville. It was open to ages 7-18, with the top three placers in each event advancing to the state meet held in Cumming in two weeks.
Cherokee County had more participants than any of the other clubs represented. Those numbers were reflected in some of the events, such as the girls 7-8 25-yard breaststroke, in which each of the qualifiers were from the county. Elysium Virnich won in 24.35 seconds, followed by Abby Richardson (25.05) and Amelia Windham (27.42).
Also winning in the girls 7-8 group was the 100 medley relay team of Lainey Blase, Windham, Sadie Castle and Portis Macie (1:25.34). Blase also went on to win the 100 individual medley (1:34.94), followed by Portis (1:46.59) and Castle (1:47.79).
Other winners included Jacob Heeter, who finished the boys 13-14 freestyle in 1:00.95, and Laurel Blase, who finished the girls 9-10 50 free in 30.87. Garrett Joseph won the boys 15-18 50 breaststroke (30.09).
In the boys 9-10 age group, Clint Schuler won the 50 freestyle (43.64) and 25 freestyle (14.68), while Chad Morrow, Logan Wetterling, Thaddeus Palmer and Ethan Cintron teamed for wins in the boys 13-14 medley relay (2:06.32) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.49).
Wetterling (33.03) and Cintron (43.26) went on to finish first and third, respectively, in the breaststroke, while Palmer won the 100 individual medley (1:07.72) and 50 butterfly (27.80). Finishing behind Palmer in the butterfly were Wetterling (28.34) and Heeter (29.65), completing a Cherokee County sweep of the state-qualifying spots.
Caleb Miller won the boys 7-8 25 freestyle (16.90), with Jacob Howell (17.91) second. Kyle Richardson (38.64) and Jacob Herbert (39.64) took the top two spots in the boys 11-12 50 breaststroke.
Bella Pacini won the girls 9-10 25 backstroke with (17.32). In the girls 11-12 200 freestyle relay, Madison Wechter, Mattie Villhauer, Adare Carmody and Ashley Fortin teamed for the victory in 1:58.05.
