Youth swimmers from around the state visited Holly Springs over the weekend for the Georgia Games youth championships at the Cherokee County Aquatic Center.

Cherokee County swimmers showed they were comfortable in their home pool, as a group of 24 walked away with 22 top-three finishes, including 12 championships.

Knox Elementary School student and Chattahoochee Gold swimmer Harper Johnson had the best day with wins in the 10-and-under 50-yard freestyle, 25-yard freestyle and 25-yard breaststroke, to go along with a second-place finish in the 100-yard individual medley.

Mill Creek Middle School student Carson Portis was just as successful in the 12-and-under division, claiming championships in the 100 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly. Cherokee County’s lone high school representative, River Ridge’s Brock Edwards, finished first in the 50 freestyle and second in the 50 butterfly.

The county’s boys performances were rounded out by Knox Elementary School student Bryce Johnson’s second-place finish in the 8-and-under 25 freestyle, and Dean Rusk Middle School student Clint Schulers’ third-place finish in the same event in the 10-and-under age group.

The county’s girls were led by Laurel Blase, who won the 12-and-under 100 freestyle, and Caroline Selph, who won the 12-and-under 50 backstroke and finished third in the 50 butterfly. Lainey Blase finished third in the 10-and-under 50 freestyle.

Freedom Middle School’s Bailey Arnold was on state championship teams in the 14-and-under 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. She was joined in the medley relay by Woodstock’s Rachel Selph.

Canton’s Ava Hoynowski and Woodstock’s Sadie Castle teamed up to win the 8-and-under 100 medley relay.

Dean Rusk Middle School’s Delaney Harrison was on teams that finished second in the 200 medley relay and third in the 200 freestyle relay. In the 12-and-under division, Canton’s Alice Pelton finished third in the 10-and-under 100 medley relay.
